ORTHOPEDICS

Orthopedics is a medical specialization involves studying and treatment of the musculoskeletal system, spine, joints, and muscles. It deals with the correction of deformities of bones or muscles. In addition, orthopedics is the main treatment for back pain.

“Your muscles cannot get "longer" without some rather radical orthopedic surgery.”

Mark RippetoeAuthor

Thousands of patients traveling abroad looking for orthopedic surgery to correct problems with their knees, shoulders, hips, and spine. According to the that most orthopedic treatments are not regarded as pressing by the healthcare system in most of the Europe countries, an increasing number of patients are turning to treatment in Turkey, taking advantage of the world's best healthcare techniques, for a lower of the cost and without the excessive waiting times.

Orthopedic surgery is performed by a surgeon specialist, who had Experienced in correcting problems in the bones, joints, and ligaments of the body.

“I've had 36 orthopedic operations, have two fused ankles, my knees, hands, and wrists don't work, I now have a fused spine, other than that, everything is great.”

The most common orthopedic surgeries are, knee, hip, shoulder, or joint replacement, spine surgery, ankle replacement, rotator cuff repair, and arthroscopic surgery.

Total knee replacement

If the knee has damaged by arthritis or injury, it could be hard for the patient to do simple activities and will begin the feel pain while climbing stairs, walking, sitting or lying down. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis. Which they cause chronic pain at the knee. The patient should be performed knee replacement surgery if nonsurgical treatments are not helpful, whereby the damaged knee joint is replaced with artificial material. The surface of joint will be modified to be suitable for containing the artificial metal joint, this artificial joint will be attached to the femur, leg, and patella by a physiological adhesive. Then it will be fixed to knee muscles and jointly supported ligaments. This surgery will be last about 2 hours and applied under total anesthetic or regional anesthetic such as; spinal, epidural, or peripheral nerve block.

  • Participating in regular light exercise programs to maintain strength and mobility of new knee.
  • Avoiding falls and injuries. If he breaks a bone in his leg, he may be performed more surgery.
  • He has to see the orthopedic surgeon periodically for a routine follow-up examination and x-rays, usually once a year.
Most patients are able to care for themselves and do simple activities after 6 weeks of total knee replacement. But a fully recover may take 3 months at least.
Success rates for this surgery are very high with 9 out of 10 people immediate pain relief and 95% reporting gratitude with the procedure.
The new joint should last about 20 years at least, and it could last longer.

Herniated disk surgery

There is a disk between the vertebrae in the spine, its function is to shock absorption and help cushion the bones, if this disk extends beyond the capsule containing it, it will cause pressure on the spinal canal and called herniated disk. Besides pain (sciatica), a herniated disk may lead to numbness, tingling, and weakness.

In case that the pharmacological or physical treatment is not successful, the patient should have one of a herniated disk surgery types:

Diskectomy/microdiscectomy, It is the most common surgery for Herniated disk, in which that the surgeon will remove a part of an entire intervertebral disc. He can use smaller incision to lead same result (microdiscectomy), so that patient will recover quickly.

Laminotomy/laminectomy, it is a surgery performed to remove only a minor segment of the lamina and relieve pressure on the nerve roots, through a small incision, less than an inch in size. In some cases, lamina removing is required and it is called (laminectomy).

Artificial disk surgery, This type of surgery is used for one disk when the problem is in the lower back (lumbar). The damaged disk is replaced with an artificial disk made from plastic and metal through a small incision in the abdomen.

Spinal fusion surgery, It is an option when motion is the source of pain, in this surgery the portion of the spine will be permanently immobilized. Where the surgeon will fuse two or more vertebrae together with bone grafts, and metal or plastic bolts and rods designed to provide additional support.

It takes about 3 to 4 months after surgery until bones to heal.
It can lead to constant nerve damage. In some rare cases, a damaged disk can cut off nerve impulses to the caudal equine nerves in the lower back and legs.

Carpal tunnel release (CTR)

Carpal tunnel is a syndrome in which the patients suffer from the pain, numbness, and tingling in his fingers. Because of the pressure on the median nerve, this also leads to a lack of feeling in his pinky.

This surgery is performed by cutting the ligament that forms the top of the carpal tunnel and making more space for the nerve and tendons.

It is anywhere from several weeks to several months, according to the case.
This surgery is done under local anesthetic.
He does not need to stay in the hospital and can go home on the same day.

Orthopedic Surgery also Include correction of congenital malformations in the bones of children, treatment of chronic arthritis, fractures, bone transplantation, prosthetics and the use of medical shoes.
